Privacy

Ok ladies and gentleman that care about privacy, this article is for you.

EMAIL

When you initially contact a member or they contact you, before exchanging personal emails, YM, etc,  get to know each other.

For example.

A male member initiates contact with a new lady member. Do not provide any personal YM’s, emails etc, in your initial message. If she does respond to your initial message with her YM, email, and is asking for yours, your response should be something like: “I would like to get to know you better before exchanging personal info. Please tell me about yourself”. Also, take the time to tell him or her a little about yourself.

Why in the heck do you want to give someone your personal email address before you get to know them. I don’t’ care if it is a junk email address, all email addresses have your IP address in the header so why give out that type of info until you had a chance to get to know the other person.

SITE PUBLIC AREAS

Probably the worse place you can put any contact information is in a public area of the site. Where are the public areas of the site? Any place on the site a visitor can explore without having to log in to the site. If you want to check out what a visitor can see, log out of the site and now you are viewing the site as if you are a visitor. When you are logged in, you are viewing the site as a member.

In most cases, anyone can visit a site. You can go to another dating site and check it out, without having to log in. Usually the only sites that are  completely closed off to visitors, is a paid membership site. Our site is free membership, consequently, not all areas of the site is closed to visitors.

When you registered or signed up for this site, you provided your email address. This email address is not visible to visitors. After you signed up, you can send a member a message by clicking the Send message link in their profile. If you follow these steps you are protecting your email address from being exposed. However, I get members who log in and put their email address, phone number, etc in public areas that are not protected (i.e. My Status, in their Profile description, in comments, etc). Visitors can see these areas of the site.

Putting your email addresses in public areas can be detrimental to the individual, but  it can also hurt the site. Can you imagine the type of visitors this site would get if I allowed email addresses to be posted in public areas. The news would spread like wild fire and before I knew it, I would have every email spam bot on the net visiting the site eating up precious bandwidth. I can't allow this.

Simple rule: when you signed up for the site, you provided your email address. There is no need to put it anywhere else. If you send a message to another member and put your email address in the message, only the member you sent the message to will see it, but there are other concerns you may want to consider before doing so (I discuss above under the heading EMAIL).

Lastly, no matter what a webmaster does, he can't guarantee  that people will follow the rules or that someone won't sign up, lie on their registration form and try to cause problems after they join. I don't have a crystal ball and can't predict what a person will do after they join the site. However, even the big boys, like facebook, myspace, etc, with all their resources, can't stop all unethical people from joining their site and they ask members to report another member if they violate site rules. I ask the same. Even though we can't stop all unethical individuals from trying their best to penetrate a site, we can stop a good percentage of them if we follow some simple rules and guidelines.

The End of Heed.
